Must see in Munich City: Theatiner Church

When counting the Must see in Munich city, you should not miss this church. This church built in the Italian high baroque style can be found in the monumental Theatinerkirche on Odeonsplatz opposite the Residence of kings.

Theatiner Church of St. Kajetan

It was built from 1663 to 1690. From the outside, the church has a beautiful facade with twin towers and a huge 71 meter high dome. There are many marble statues of saints that add value to the exterior of the place.

This church cannot be overlooked at all thanks to its pastel yellow color and can be recognized from afar. The exterior color in a concept by Cuvellier forms a good contrast to its elegant white interior.

In the church there is a small chapel with the graves of King Maximilian II and Queen Marie from Prussia, as well as the crypt with the princely grave in which several members of the Bavarian royal family of the House of Wittelsbach are buried.

When you enter and move towards the altar, your eyes are immediately drawn towards the dome, because the interior of the church is richly decorated with stucco. You have to be careful not to twist your neck. Due to its distinctive Italian decor, the church looks almost like a bright white decorated wedding cake.

The high altar shows a picture of the enthroned Virgin surrounded by angels, as well as the altar of the Virgin with the painting of the Holy Tribe.
